Working Mobile In The Dark

A private hospital group asked me recently to do some general portraits for their annual report. Sounds like a straight forward assignment. So I went there and set up my lightstand, flash etc. There were about 30 staff to be photographed. Same setup, neutral, white background. All looked well and easy going. I worked with the first person and was happy with how everything worked. While I was waiting for the next staff member, the building was hit by a power outage and I was surrounded by darkness. We were in the headoffice and not in one of the hospitals which all have generators. The headoffice doesn’t.

I always thought, travelling relatively light with wireless and battery operated strobes would be an advantage. In this case, it was the only way to continue the photoshoot with the selected lighting setup. Other than making sure that the autofocus would work properly, I was able to work in a bit darker environment and still get properly exposed images.
