Steve Bailey called me this week and asked me, if I could help him lighting a photo shoot that he was going to do for Paarl Printing. Steve told me that he was going to use his Sky Shot setup for the shoot. He told me about it before, but I didn’t see it in action yet. I found his approach fascinating and asked him to share with you the story behind the photograph:
“The Paarl Printing factory in Paarl burnt down last month April with a terrible loss of life to its staff ( 13 IN TOTAL ) and many more badly injured. The impact on the remaining staff has been considerable.
The management have taken great care to ensure the staff get the very best trauma counseling available and intend to reopen the printing division in August of this year with brand new equipment
Paarl Printing contacted Steve Bailey ( Steve had carried out photography last year for the new PAARL MEDIA group brochure ) for a staff photograph unique in the sense that it had to be taken from above the group who created a heart shape with their red T Shirts.
Because of the unique requirements for the photograph, plus the unusual location ( Action Cricket Nets ) Steve asked Jurgen for assistance with his knowledge of photo lighting. Jurgens lighting was used to great effect
The only method to ensure a full width photograph from height to ensure the heart shape was obvious was by using Steve’s SKY SHOTS equipment. The equipment consists of a 15 metre tripod boom, Canon Digital camera and USB connections using live view to a laptop. The live view of the potential photograph can be viewed by the client on the lap top screen.
After several attempts the finished “heart” was created, this to show the heart of Paarl Printing was still beating.”
You find more about Steve here. He uses the Skyshot often for the photography of properties, which makes them often more marketable via the bird’s eye view.
