Anglo American

Anglo American hired me recently to photograph their presence at the Mining Indaba 2009 at the CTICC (Cape Town Intenational Convention Center). They wanted to document their stand at the exhibition as well as images of the speech by the CEO of Anglo American South Africa. For a lot of the images, I used either availble light or wireless activated strobes in combination with available light. The light conditions were mostly less than ideal for photography with low ISO settings. For this image of the stand, I made use of a tripod with a longer exposure time, to capture the backlit posters and ambience. The use of a tripod was essential.

During the speech of the CEO, Kuseni Dlamini, I worked with various approaches of using off camera and on camera flash. Luckily, I was able to move freely in the front row of the auditorium. Using multiple strobes, created that extra depth of light, I was looking for.

My assignment continued in the evening at a dinner held by Anglo American at the Vergelegen Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. The evening event had it’s own challenges as I aimed to display the atmosphere of the event with the images. So I kept the use of flash to a minimum and even worked totally without flash on high ISO and aperture 1.4 on my 50mm lens. Using on camera flash was totally out of question and when I used flash, I had it separate from the camera. The image below was taken without flash, with above settings at ISO 800. Working without flash allowed me to move more discreet around and get some interesting atmospheric shots of the guests.
